Non-tanned by-products from the hide and leather industry, for example hide trimmings, are formed into a substantially homogenous paste, for example by mincing, treated at room temperature with a solution of potash alum until the pH of the paste is lowered at least to 3.5, and the liquid is thereafter mechanically expelled from the treated product. Fat, which tends to rise to the surface in the treatment, may be recovered separately. The alum solution may additionally contain an acid such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, or formic acid, and also sodium chloride. The thus-treated material may be subjected to a further treatment with an alkaline solution, for example of sodium carbonate, and then dried and used as a food for animals.
