Abstract

A valve comprises a closure member 14 slidable between seatings 18 and an automatic plastic-sealing system is operable when the valve is closed to provide a sealing on the downstream side of the valve. A sealant reservoir 20 is connected to a groove 41 which is connected to a passage 42 opening in the face of the valve seat opposite a groove 45 in the closure 14, when the valve is closed, the groove 45 being a short arcuate groove which connects the ends of a groove 43 in the valve seat. The sealant is fed to the groove on the downstream side by an upstream fluid pressure which leaks to the housing chamber 30 and passes through a passage 40 to act on a barrier piston 26 mounted on a hollow piston rod 32 which connects the fluid pressure to the lower side of a booster piston 30, the upper side of the booster piston being connected to the flow passage by a port 25. Thus, when the valve is closed, both the barrier piston 26 and booster piston 30 on the downstream side are actuated to provide a rapid delivery of sealant. The barrier piston 26 may be slidable on the piston-rod or connected to it. When the piston is slidable on the rod, as shown, it is loaded by a spring 36 to maintain the sealant under pressure.
