Abstract

1,018,675. Valves. A. S. VOLPIN. Jan. 23, 1964 [Jan. 31, 1963; Jan. 6, 1964], No. 2987/64. Heading F2V. A fluid-sealed sliding-gate valve has a flow passage therethrough, a closure member 21, a seat 18 engageable by the closure member, a groove 44 disposed about the flow passage between the seat and the closure member, a sealant reservoir 38 connected by a passage 43a to the groove 44 in the closed position of the member 21, barrier means 40 in the reservoir movable in response to fluid pressure differentials across the valve when the member 21 is closed, and a trap chamber 13 to receive foreign matter expelled from the groove 44 by the entry of sealant. A recess 45 in the member 21 transfers sealant from the passage 43a to the groove 44 while foreign matter flows from the latter through a passage 61, groove 60, passage 62, recess 63, passage 59, groove 58 and passage 57 into a cylinder 50 containing a spring-loaded piston 54. A vent 65 in the closure member is aligned with the passage 61 when the valve is returned to open position so that the cylinder 50 is discharged into the chamber 13.
