Abstract

To maintain the ductility of a steel rope it is manufactured with a maximum silicon content of 0.015%. The rope is formed from a plurality of heavily cold drawn stranded steel wires consisting of:- .carbon.0.55/0.85% .manganese.0.35/1.20% .phosphorus.0.04% max .sulphur.0.05% max .nitrogen.0.004/0.012% .silicon.0.015% max with balance iron and other elements in residual amounts, the wires having an ultimate tensile strength in excess of 220,000 lbs per sq. inch. There may be a maximum of 0.07% aluminium and the cold drawing is such as to effect a reduction in area of between 75 and 90%. Preferably the carbon does not exceed 0.65% and the manganese content comprises 0.60 to 0.90%.ALSO:To maintain the ductility of a steel rope it is manufactured with a maximum silicon content of 0.015%. The rope is formed from a plurality of heavily cold drawn stranded steel wires consisting of .carbon.0.55/0.85% .manganese.0.35/1.20% .phosphorus.0.04% max .sulphur.0.05% max .nitrogen.0.004/0.012% .silicon.0.015% max .silicon.0.015% max with balance iron and other elements in residual amounts, the wires having an ultimate tensile strength in excess of 220,000 lbs per sq. inch. There may be a maximum of 0.07% aluminium and the cold drawing is such as to effect a reduction in area of between 75 and 90%. Preferably the carbon does not exceed 0.65% and the manganese content comprises 0.60 to 0.90%.
