Abstract

1,040,743. Electrically heated rollers. CAPS (RESEARCH) Ltd. May 27, 1963 [May 29, 1962; Nov. 16, 1962], Nos. 20702/62 and 43420/62. Heading F2U. [Also in Division H2] The operation of a microswitch in the heating circuit of an electrically heated roller is controlled (see Division H2) by an elongated member having a different coefficient of thermal expansion from that of the roller. In one arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown), the roller 1 has a channel 2 for guiding film to be developed or printed by heat and is supported by ball bearings 5 in a housing 6 attached to a supporting wall 4. A heating element 9 is wound on a hollow ceramic former 8 secured to the wall 4 by a bracket 13. Microswitch 19 is operated by an L-shaped lever 17, 18 pivoted between support arms 15 forming control members. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), a heater wire 22 coated with glass and bonded with silicon varnish is wound on an aluminium cylinder 23 disposed in an outer aluminium cylinder 25. Both cylinders are anodized and cylinder 25 has a coating of PTFE. A control rod 32 extending through an aluminium tube 29 bears against a steel ring 28 mounted in an end cap 27. Cylinder 23 is secured by asbestos web members 34 to a driving shaft 33 mounted in bearings 35 and 37, the latter being slidable. A contact arm 44 pivoted to cylinder 25 is urged by a spring 48 towards a microswitch 46 secured to the cylinder. Current supply to the switch and heater is by way of slip rings 49.
