Abstract
1,174,723. Rollers. WHITIN MACHINE WORKS, Inc. 13 June, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 28253/68. Heading F2U. An electrically heated roller 10 for treating textile filaments comprises a stainless steel shell 56 detachably secured on a rotatable core 62 carrying a heating element 64 by differential expansion between the shell and core. The shell 56 is a sliding fit on the core 62 at ambient temperature but is an interference fit with the core at the operating temperature of the roll. The core has an inner stainless steel sleeve 58 on which is cast an aluminium alloy layer 62. A helical rod type heater element 64 is embedded in the layer 62. The sleeve 58 is welded to an end plate 44 secured on a motor shaft 12. Cooling fins 44c, 48 reduce the conduction of heat to the motor bearing 42. A resistance wire temperature sensor is helically wound round the end of the core 62 and is connected to a control (Fig. 1, not shown) for the heater element. The heater element 64 and temperature sensor 78 are supplied through slip rings (16), a cable 74 passing through the motor shaft 12 and conductors 68, 69, 84, 85. A screw 90 prevents axial movement of the shell at ambient temperature.
