Abstract

2,3 - Bis(2,3 - epoxypropoxy) - 1,4 - dioxane is produced by reacting together glyoxal, ethylene glycol and allyl alcohol in the presence of sulphuric acid and treating the 2,3-diallyloxy-1,4-dioxane thus produced with a solution of peracetic acid in ethyl acetate.ALSO:Cellulosic textile materials, e.g. cotton, linen and viscose rayon, are crease proofed and shrink proofed by impregnating them with a liquid medium containing a diepoxy-dioxane having the formula <FORM:1040728/D1-D2/1> in which R is a hydrocarbon radical containing 1-3 carbon atoms and R1 is a hydrogen atom or methyl radical and then drying and heating. The liquid medium is preferably an aqueous medium which may also contain emulsifying agents and water-miscible organic solvents, e.g. methyl, hydroxy ethyl or carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide, toluene, xylene, ethyl, butyl or isopropyl alcohol, acetone or an ester. The liquid medium may contain a catalyst, e.g. phosphoric, hydrochloric, boric, alkane sulphonic, perchloric, persulphuric, p-toluene sulphonic, citric, acetic, butyric, caproic, phthalic, tartaric, oxalic, succinic, fumaric, glutaconic, malonic acetoacetic and naphthalicacids acetic, phthalic and succinic acid anhydrides, magnesium, tin, cadmium, sodium or zinc fluoborate, boron trifluoride etherate, stannic, aluminium or magnesium chloride, sodium, zinc or aluminium sulphate and the hydrochlorides of aniline, n-propyl-amine, di-n-butylamine, dibenzylamine, triethylamine, alpha-phenylethylamine, beta-amino anthraquinone, 1, 3-diaminoanthraquinone, piperidine, pyridine, quinoline, pyrrole, morpholine, guanidine, 2-amino-2-methylpropanol and isobutanolamine. Formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde resins, 1, 3-dimethylol-5-ethyltetra-hydro-s-triazin-2(1H)-one, mono-or dimethylol urea, mono- or dimethylol ethylene urea, methylated methylol ureas, plasticizers, natural resins or softening agents may also be included in the liquid medium. After impregnation the textile material may be dried at a temperature of 95 DEG -175 DEG F for 5-1 minutes and then cured by heating at a temperature of 240 DEG -400 DEG F for between 15 seconds and 5 minutes.
