Abstract
Oxetane derivatives for use in textile treating compositions are prepared as follows:-(a) 3-ethyl-3-hydroxy methyl oxetane is prepared by reacting together 1,1,1,-trimethylol propane, diethyl carbonate and potassium hydroxide dissolved in ethanol; the corresponding 3-methyl derivative is obtained by using 1,1,1-trimethylolethane instead of 1,1,1-trimethylol propanes and a similar method is used for preparing the C3-C8 alkyl derivatives: and (b) 3-(hydroxyethoxyethoxy-methyl)-3-methyl oxetane, <FORM:0940272/C2/1> is prepared by heating 3-methyl-3-chloromethyl oxetane with a solution of sodium in diethylene glycol and 3,3-di-(hydroxyethoxyethoxymethyl)-oxetane is obtained similarly starting from 3,3-dichloromethyl oxetane; reference is also made to the preparation of 3-(n-octyl)-3-[hydroxy (ethoxy)10 methyl] oxetane.ALSO:Cellulosic or proteinaceous textile fibres (e.g. cotton, rayon or wool) are given crease-resistance crush-resistance, wrinkle-resistance and shrinkage stabilization by treating them with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a mixture of (A) 60-95% of an aminoplast comprising a condensate of formaldehyde with (i) N, N1-ethyleneurea, (ii) N, N1-trimethyleneurea, (iii) a tetrahydro-s-triazone-2 substituted in the 5-position with a b -hydroxyethyl, b -hydroxypropyl or a C1-C4 alkyl group or (iv) an aminotriazine (e.g. melamine) and (B) 5-40% of an oxetane compound of formula <FORM:0940272/D1-D2/1> in which R DEG is -H, -CH2(CnH2n)x-1 OH, -CH2Cl or an alkyl group containing 1-8 carbon atoms, n is 2 or 3 and x is 1 to 11. The aminoplast may be etherified with a C1-C4 alcohol. The composition may be applied to the fibres, filaments or yarn before fabrication but is preferably applied to the preformed fabric. Application may be by spraying, brushing, dipping, padding or roller coating. An aminoplast curing agent (many specified) is applied to the fibres before, simultaneously with or after the composition is applied, the preferred curing agents being zinc fluoborate and zinc nitrate. After application excess of the aqueous composition is removed, the treated material is dried and the aminoplast composition is used by heating it to 220 DEG -450 DEG F. (e.g. by heated air currents, infra-red radiation or high frequency electric induction). Examples describe the treatment of a white cotton fabric.
