Abstract
Textile materials of cotton, artificial silk, jute, linen or wool, in the form of loose fibres, yarns or woven material, are rendered water-repellent by treatment with high molecular thiocyanic methyl ethers of the general formula R.O.CH2.S.CN where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical containing a saturated alkyl radical of at least 10 carbon atoms or the saturated or unsaturated radical of an alcohol of the sterol series, followed by heating. The ethers may be added to viscose spinning solutions. Aqueous solutions of the quaternary ammonium compounds of the ethers may be used to impregnate the material, and water-soluble salts of alkalies or alkaline earths with weak acids, e.g. sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium cyanate, may be added to the solution to prevent damage to the material when heated. Crease-proof producing agents, e.g. formaldehyde, with or without urea, an artificial resin such as a urea resin or an initial condensation product thereof, may be added to the solution. In examples: (1) the quaternary trimethylamine compound of octadecylthiocyanicmethyl ether is added to a viscose spinning solution; (2) a mercerized cotton raincoat material is impregnated at 50 DEG C. with an aqueous solution of the quaternary pyridinium salt of the same ether, wrung out, dried and heated for a few hours at 90 DEG C.
