Abstract

Clay is bleached by treating an aqueous suspension thereof with a water-soluble sulphite, bisulphite or disulphite and/or SO2 or H2SO3, adding an alkali metal borohydride and adjusting the pH to 2.5-4. 1.5-10 mols. of SO3- - or HSO3 - ions, or 0.75-5 mols. of S2O5- - ions, may be added per mol. of BH4- ion. 10-2000 ppm. of BH4-, referred to the dry weight of the clay, may be added and the pH adjusted by the addition of a non-oxidizing acid, e.g. dilute H2SO4. The bleaching may take place at 30-80 DEG C. The clay, which may be kaolin, bentonite or montmorillonite, may be pre-cleaned, e.g. by normal elutriating. Sodium borohydride may be used as the solid, but preferably as the aqueous solution.
