Abstract

1,039,636. Proportional dividers. M. KIDJEL. Aug. 11, 1964, No. 32664/64. Heading B6P. A pair of proportional dividers comprises two legs 1 pivoted at 2, with first point means 11 and second point means 10 at the ends of each leg, the arrangement being such that the ratio of the distances between the first point means and the second point means is 3: 16 or 1: 5À333. The legs 1 are angularly adjustable about the axis 2 by adjustment means including the two links 6 pivoted at 5 to the legs 1, and the connecting pivot 7. A central stem 8, fixed at the axis 2 is slidably mounted at the pivot 7, and can be clamped at the pivot 7 to fix the adjusted angular position of the legs 1. The dividers may be used to trisect an angle, square a circle, construct a regular pentagon or find the side of a cube having twice the volume of a given cube. They are of use in portrait drawing, Fig. 8, since the ratio of the distances 25, 23 to 23, 24 is 3: 16 for normal human beings.
