Abstract

1,039,065. Foundry ladles. CALDERON AUTOMATION Inc. July 16, 1965 [July 17, 1964], No. 30216/65. Heading F4B. Molten metal for direct casting, for use in a continuous casting machine or for degassing is discharged from a ladle 20 under control of a valve 121 vertically movable below a discharge nozzle 35 by a cantilever arm 100 incorporating a refractory lined funnel 110 carrying fins 120 supporting said valve and forming a reservoir with a substantially constant head of metal. Arm 100 has an attaching block 101 engaging the frusto-conical end 94 of an operating shaft 70 movable longitudinally in a bearing block 71 in a cylinder 57. Shaft 70 is actuated by screw 75 rotated within a casing 76 either by an electric motor or manual drive, Fig. 2 (not shown), through angular drive unit 78. Accurate positioning of valve 121 is ensured by pivotally mounting cylinder 57 in brackets 50 secured to the ladle shell 21 and moving it laterally by screws 64 engaging brackets 60 attached to said shell, the screws 64 passing through spherical adjusting nuts mounted on the cylinder. Funnel 110 has an annular well 103 in heat exchange relationship with known heat-sensitive devices 140 by which the level of molten metal in said funnel is sensed and used to control the electric motor driving the shaft 70. The latter is prevented from rotating in cylinder 57 by forming the lower end with a square section 88 movable within angle blocks held in said cylinder by set-screws, Fig. 5 (not shown). The invention is shown applied, Fig. 11 (not shown), to both a ladle disposed over a degassing vessel and to the degassing vessel itself. The latter is mounted on a wheeled frame above a truck of ingot moulds.
