Abstract

In a ring-and-traveller arrangement for a spinning-frame, the ring is rotatably mounted on a support adapted to provide a cushion of air between the ring and the support on which the ring can rotate, the traveller engaging the ring and being freely rotatable thereon. In Fig. 2, (not shown) the ring-holder has an inclined bearing-surface 19 to receive a corresponding surface of a ring 14. The holder has an internal passage 22 closed by an insert 23 which communicates by ducts 20 with eight exits 21, so that air under pressure fed into the passage 22 forms a cushion to support the ring. The skirt portion 12 of the ring is of smaller diameter than the support and may be fitted with inclined blades. The drag of the traveller acting on the ring-portion 13 causes the ring to rotate and air impinging on the blades imparts an additional driving thrust to the ring. When high operating speeds are employed, the supply of air may be reduced or cut off when the ring reaches a desired speed. To reduce the speed of the ring, the latter may be provided with holes, to give an aero-dynamic braking effect, or friction or eddy-current braking-devices which may be variable according to the weight of the traveller. In Fig. 3, (not shown) the ring comprises a skirt 26 running on rings 29, 30 clamped together at 33. These have ducts 37, 39 with threaded and bored plugs 34 leaving clearances 27, 28 providing an air-cushion when air under pressure is introduced into the ducts 37, 38.
