Abstract

An hydraulic brake fluid contains a diester of succinic acid of general formula ROOC.CH2.CH2.COOR1 wherein R and R1 represent the same or different groups, said groups being alkyl groups containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms or alkoxy alkyl groups formed by the addition of one or more molecules of ethylene or propylene oxide to methanol or ethanol in admixture with a non-volatile component as hereinbefore defined. In examples, the esters used are bis-2-methoxyethyl succinate and di-isopropyl succinate; the succinic diester of the monomethyl ether of diethylene glycol is also mentioned. The non-volatile component may be polypropylene glycol, esters of ricinoleic acid, alkylene oxide derivatives of castor oil, or mono-, di-, tri, or tetra-alkylene glycols and/or their alkyl ethers. Castor oil is included in one example, and 0.5% of diphenylol propane in another.
