Abstract

A composition comprises an organic material susceptible to oxidative deterioration in the presence of molecular oxygen, e.g. an oil, fat, wax or grease, and a minor proportion of a tetranuclear phenol of the formula <FORM:0883033/III/1> where the groups R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, the groups R3 are alkyl groups or hydrogen atoms and n is a number from 1 to 6. The Provisional Specification refers to compounds of the general formula where R1, R2 and R3 may represent hydrogen atoms.ALSO:A composition comprises an organic material susceptible to oxidative deterioration in the presence of molecular oxygen, e.g. a natural polymer such as rubber or a synthetic polymer such as a polyolefin, and a minor proportion of a tetranuclear phenol of the formula <FORM:0883033/IV (a)/1> where the groups R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, the groups R3 are alkyl groups or hydrogen atoms and n is a number from 1 to 6. An example describes the stabilization of linear polyethylene. The Provisional Specification refers to compounds of the general formula where R1, R2 and R3 may represent hydrogen atoms.ALSO:A composition comprises an organic material susceptible to oxidative deterioration in the presence of molecular oxygen and a minor proportion of a tetranuclear phenol of the formula <FORM:0883033/IV (b)/1> where the groups R1 and R2 are alkyl groups, the groups R3 are alkyl groups or hydrogen atoms and n is a number from 1 to 6. The organic material may be for example, a hydrocarbon, a polymer, a polymerisable composition, a plasticiser, or an oil, fat, wax or grease. An example describes the stabilisation of n-hexadecane. The invention also includes the compounds 1,1,5,5 - tetrakis - (2 - hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethylphenyl) pentane, 1,1,3,3-tetrakis (4- hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethylphenyl) propane and 2,2,4,4 - tetrakis - (4 - hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethyl - phenyl) pentane which may be prepared by reacting the phenol with the appropriate diketone or dialdehyde acetal. The Provisional Specification refers to compounds of the general formula where R1, R2 and R3 may represent hydrogen atoms.
