Abstract
1,038,002. Burners. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 31, 1964 [April 2, 1963], No. 13207/64. Headings F4F and F4T. A burner comprises fixed external and internal ducts 1, 11 defining an annular discharge channel for primary air and pulverized coal, and an axially movable tube 15 disposed within the internal duct 11 and housing an oil burner 221 and a gas lighter 21. The gas lighter 21 is ignited by an electrode 30 and its flame is detected by a U-shaped electrode 31. The flame of the oil burner 22<SP>1</SP> is detected by a photo-electric cell 51 within a sighting tube. At low oil outputs the oil is atomized by steam and at high oil outputs the oil is mechanically atomized. The internal duct 11 is locked by a screw 37 in a sleeve 7 extending from a plate 8 closing an aperture in a bent tube 3 connecting the outer duct 1 with a coal and air supply duct 4. Air from a burner box (not shown) enters an inlet 12 in the sleeve 7 and passes through holes 48, 49, 50 to the spaces between the internal duct 11 and the movable tube 15, and between the latter and a tube 35 enclosing the oil supply tube 22 and between the tube 35 and the oil supply tube. The movable tube 15 is divided into two compartments 19, 20 by a W-shaped partition 18. The gas lighter is disposed in the upper compartment 19 and comprises a pilot burner and two lances 24, 25 supplied with gas through calibrated orifices in a tube 26 connected to an inlet 27. The oil burner is disposed in the lower compartment 20. Air is supplied to the upper compartment 19 by an air inlet 32. The movable tube 15 is supported eccentrically within the internal duct 11 by radial studs 17 fixed to the inside of the internal duct 11 and is moved by two laterally spaced pneumatic jacks comprising cylinders secured to the end of the internal duct 11 and pistons secured to a plate 43 secured by regulating screws 44 to lugs 45 welded to the tube 15. Electric cables 14, 14<SP>1</SP> for the lighting and flame detecting devices lead into a connection box 16 supported on the end of the movable tube 15. Diffusing deflectors 14 are externally supported on the internal duct 11. The oil supply tube may be replaced by two tubes of different capacities.
