Abstract

1,037,999. Grinding. T. CALDWELL. June 1, 1965 [March 4, 1964], No. 9113/64. Heading B3D. A chamfer grinding machine comprises a grinding disc 2 driven by a motor 5 carried by a base 1 on which is a guide support 3 having a slideway 3A with sidewalls mutually convergent in the direction of the grinding disc for receiving the corner of a workpiece, and a slot 13 in the slideway through which the corner of the workpiece can project into engagement with the peripheral face of the grinding disc. The guide support 3 is supported at opposite ends on blocks 8 on the base and is formed with a recess 10 having an arcuate shape 10A, Fig. 3 (not shown), for cleaning the grinding disc 2. The sidewalls 11, which may be at 90 degrees or some other angle to each other, converge on a channel 12, and the slot 13 is wider than the channel. The grinding disc is carried by the electric motor 5 which is mounted on a plate 15 at one end carried by a pivot 16, Fig. 1 (not shown), on a wad of the base, and at the other end having a ball-and-socket connection with a screw 18 rotatable by a hand wheel 19 to adjust the vertical position of the grinding disc and thus the size of the chamfer ground on a workpiece moved along the slideways. Dressing.-The support 3 may carry a tool for dressing the grinding disc, the tool being moved across the disc by moving the support about a pivot 24, Fig. 3, by which one end of the support is secured to the base, an amount determined by movement of a pin 26 secured to the support along an arcuate slot 28 in the base, the support being movable against the friction of a washer 29 urged by a spring 30 into engagement with the base. In other embodiments, the guide support 3 is movable bodily across the disc, and the motor 5 may be mounted for vertical adjustment in a slide. The grinding may be driven by a flexible drive and only the disc, and not the motor, be vertical adjustable. Flash or burr may be removed by the machine.
