Abstract

1,037,971. Siphon-discharged water-waste preventers. WILLIAM ROSS & SONS Ltd. July 6, 1962 [Dec. 6, 1960], No. 41925/60. Heading E1C Flushing apparatus of the valveless siphon type comprises in a duct 7 thereof a chamber 12 within which is an obturator 13 which, in a first position, covers a first aperture 16 or apertures therein, one aperture or apertures 23 also being in the walls thereof, and is moved by a piston 9 into that position, the aperture 16 or apertures communicating with the duct 7 and the aperture or apertures 23 with the interior of the cistern outside the duct 7. A spherical member 17 on the obturator 19 is engageable with the aperture 16 to cover it. The latter has a crosssection of less size than that of the apertures 23. The obturator 13 is moved by a lever arm 11 on a rotatable shaft 24 journalled in the cistern wall with one end outside it and having a handle 26, a stud projecting from the shaft 24 intended to contact a fixed abutment to restrict its turning. The lever arm 11 raises the piston 9 in the leg 7 for siphonage a second fixed abutment being contacted by the stud when the shaft is turned and moved axially from a position in line with the first abutment to one in line with the second abutment. The angle through which the shaft is turned is then greater than in the former condition when the obturator 13 does not act to cover the aperture 16. The stud may be located within a slot system in a fixed member incorporating the two abutments. In one system on release after turning the handle 26 returns under gravity to the inoperative position, whereas in the other a spring tends to urge the shaft 24 to that position.
