Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1037894/C2/1> in which R1 is an aliphatic organic radical which contains at least one electron attracting atom or group which is a halogen atom or an aryl, ketone, carboxylic acid ester, sulphonic acid, nitro or cyano group, or R1 is an aromatic or heterocyclic radical which may be substituted by alkyl, cycloalkyl, dialkylamino, arylamino, aroylamino, nitro, sulphonic acid or -ester, carboxylic acid, -ester or -amide, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyloxy, acyl, aldehydo, thiocyanato, alkylmercapto, arylmercapto or cyano groups or halogen atoms or by <FORM:1037894/C2/2> or may have an aryl group, which may be substituted, fused thereto, R2 is hydrogen or an aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical which may be substituted, and R3 is an aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical which may be substituted, or R2 and R3 together with the nitrogen atom may form part of a heterocyclic system which may contain further hetero-atoms which, if nitrogen, may be part of the grouping <FORM:1037894/C2/3> in which R1 is as defined above and which heterocyclic ring may have an aryl group fused thereto. The compounds are prepared by reacting a cyanic acid ester with a primary or secondary amine. Many suitable starting materials are listed. Examples are given. In Example 13, 1-(4-methylphenyl)-3,3-pentamethylene-isourea ether decomposes on distillation to p-cresol and N-cyanopiperidine.
