Abstract

<PICT:1037694/C4-C5/1> An oven for the heat treatment of fuel briquettes comprises cylinders 1 and 2 defining an annular space divided into six stages 11-16, each including an outer frusto-conical baffle 31-36 and an inner frusto-conical 41-46 defining a zig-zag path for the briquettes charged through a hopper 25 and removed by a rotary hearth 27 below a discharge hopper 26. The upper ends of the baffles in each series lie in substantially the same horizontal planes as the lower ends of those in the other series and the lower ends of all the baffles terminate in a common vertical envelope. Alternate inner baffles 41, 43 and 45 are formed with holes 5 for the passage of gases. The oven is divided into preheating, heating and cooling sections by supplying warm gas through inlet openings 72, hot gas through openings 73 and cool gas through openings 75, the corresponding offtakes being located at 81, 84 and 86 respectively. Hot gases from the central heating section may also pass through openings 9 in cylinder 2 into a central duct 20 under control of damper 21, from which duct 20 condensation products may drain away through a lower section 23. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), gas inlets 73 and outlets 84 are replaced by perforated areas in cylinder 2 above and below the funnel 22 formed on lower duct 23, whereby hot treatment gas introduced through the space between said duct 23 and said cylinder 2 may pass through the charge material and out into central duct 20.
