Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a free piston engine having opposed pistons 1, 1a, synchronised by rods 8, 8a, interconnected by a pinion 9, the moving parts 12, 13, of telescopic tube assemblies connected to the pistons to supply cooling liquid thereto are arranged diametrically opposite the rods 8, 8a, so that their mass counterbalances the couples imposed on the pistons by the inertia of the synchronising system 8, 8a, 9. Cooling liquid is supplied through a tube 11 to tube 12 and through passages 19, 14, 16, to the piston cavity 17 from which it returns through space 21, tube 3, passage 15 and tube 13 to a common return chamber 28. The engine pistons are connected by tubes 3, to compressor pistons 2 and the tubes 13, which prevent rotation of the pistons, slide in blocks 31 which can move radially to allow for expansion of the pistons.
