Abstract

<PICT:1037669/C6-C7/1> An apparatus for producing printing plates in accordance with an original, involving point-by-point photo-electric analysis of the original by scanning, is characterized by the use of a stream of powder which is scanned over a base plate in synchronism with the analysis of the original and is controlled in respect of flow in accordance with the photo-electric signal, the deposited powder being fixed to the plate so as to build up a printing surface in accordance with the original. The base plate is metal, preferably stainless steel or a chromium-plated metal, whilst the powder may be a metal (copper and nickel are referred to) a metal alloy, a mixture of a metal and thermoplastic resins or an organic material. The stream of powder is produced by the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, where powder from a hopper 27 is given an electric charge and then propelled by grids 27, 28, 29, 30 which are held at suitable potentials, through a storage chamber 36 to a pulsating chamber 31. An electrode in chamber 31 is controlled by electric impulses so as to cause the ejection of the powder in pulses through further electrode chambers 32, 33, 34 from which the powder is eventually propelled via outlet aperture 35. An electrode at the end of the assembly is controlled by the photo-electric signal to regulate the quantity of powder which flows in accordance with the details of the original. The projected powder passes to the base plate 14 between a pair of deflection plates 38 supplied with signals, whereby the powder stream is deflected so as to scan a line on the plate, and also through a furnace 43 heated by resistance coil 44, whereby the powder is fused so that it welds to the plate. The frequency of the impulses applied to chamber 31 is controlled by the photo-electric signal so as to cause the plate to be formed without a regular pattern due to the pulses of powder.
