Abstract

1476923 Gelling particles UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 22 July 1974 [8 Aug 1973] 37690/73 Heading B1F [Also in Division C1] A method for producing particles e.g. of uranium nuclear fuel by the gelling of liquid droplets comprises forming a gellable liquid into a stream of spherical droplets in other than a liquid medium, providing on each droplet an electrical charge serving to preserve substantially spherical shape of the droplets by inhibiting them from deleteriously interacting with one another, and converting the droplets by chemical action to effect gelling thereof to form particles. The liquid may be passed through a vibrating spinnerette or single jet or an array of concentric rings of orifices, and the charge applied by an electrode e.g. a tube or spaced flat plates arranged to enclose the droplets so formed and D.C. potential difference applied between the electrode and the spinnerette or jet. In Fig. 1, a solution of a uranium compound is broken into droplets by passage through spinnerette 1 vibrated by electromagnetic vibrator 3, the particles are charged with a like electric sign as they pass through cylindrical electrode 7 which is connected to D.C. electrical supply 8, and then pass into gelling column 5 where the droplets are gelled by contact with ammonia gas and then ammonium hydroxide.
