1286871 Shaped particles UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 15 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 5500/69 Addition to 1175834 Heading C1A A material containing metal other than as free metal is made by (a) forming a viscous aqueous solution of a metal salt and a polymer containing a plurality of OH groups (other than a cellulose derivative which increases in viscosity in presence of an alkaline solution), the solution containing a complex of the polymer with metal ions; (b) shaping the viscous solution (e.g. by dropping or extrusion); (c) precipitating the metal ions as a water-insoluble inorganic compound from the solution and from the complex by contacting the formed shape with a reactive gas introduced from a source external to the vessel in which the precipitation takes place. Specified reactive gases are NH 3 , H 2 S and organic amines, e.g. methylamine. The reagent may be mixed with a non-reactive diluent, e.g. air. Mixed compounds may be produced by using a mixture of reactive gases or a mixture of metallic ions in the viscous solution. In one embodiment, gelled spheres or "gravel" is formed by dropping or extruding the viscous solution down a column containing stationary, or a counter-current stream of, precipitating gas. The gelled particles may fall on to a porous surface through which the gas is passed, or on to a moving band, or into liquid, e.g. water, through which gas is bubbled, in which case precipitation may be continued by dissolved gas. In a further embodiment, coatings of insoluble metal compounds may be formed by dipping objects in the viscous solution and exposing them to reactive gas. Examples describe the preparation of (1) spheres of hydrated thorium oxide gel from thorium nitrate solution containing dextran; (2) spheres of uranium diuranate from uranium nitrate solution containing dextran; (3) spheres of hydrated iron oxide gel from ferric chloride solution containing dextran; (4) hydrated aluminium oxide gel in the form of irregular gravel from aluminium nitrate solution containing dextran; (5) irregular gelled gravel containing iron oxide from ferric chloride solution containing carob gum. The reactive gas in all examples is ammonia.
