Abstract

1481713 Granulating CREUSOT-LOIRE 25 Nov 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 50942/74 Heading C7X Apparatus for granulating metal by atomization of a rotating electrode 1 having a solid body of revolution which is substantially cylindrical, is made of the metal or alloy to be atomized, and is rotated about its axis, comprises an enclosure 11, means 2, 6 for holding and rotating the electrode, and at least one device 20 for point heating and melting the free end-face of the electrode,the point of impact of heat being movable on the endface of the electrode so that the whole face of the electrode when rotating is traversed and heated by said point. The heating means may be an electron beam gun whose focusing and deflection may be altered to achieve said traversing, or a plasma gun or non-consumable electrode, in which two cases the distance 19-20 is kept constant by lowering cylinder 25 as electrode 1 is consumed, and cylinder 25 is rotated so that arm 23 causes device 20 to scan surface 19. As electrode 1 rotates, molten electrode material, e.g. steel, Ni or Co alloy, or Ti, Be, Nb or W alloy, is ejected centrifugally and collects as powder in hopper 12.
