Abstract

An apparatus for dividing sheet metal strip into correctly dimensioned commercial lengths comprises a shear, a roller table and a carriage adapted to grip the strip and to move along the roller table and is characterized in that an impulse generator is associated with the carriage and is connected to a counter which is connected with means for interrupting drive means for the strip when a number of impulses corresponding to a desired length have been counted. The apparatus includes a shear 1, a roller table 12 in front of the shear, a roller table 6 behind the shear, a temperature measuring device 5, and a hold-down 4, Fig. 2 (not shown). An electromagnetic or fluid-operated clamp 7 is mounted on a carriage 8 which has drive means 18a co-operating with a toothed rack 16a and an impulse generator 28a. A similar clamp 20 and carriage 17 which carries a limit switch 24 traverse the roller table 12, the rolls of which are driven individually by motors 13, which are connected to a control device 27 and operate simultaneously with the drive means 18a. Strip to be divided is gripped by the clamp 20 and moved into the shear for the waste end to be cropped. An impulse generator 28 on the carriage 17 is then switched on a feeds impulses to a counter 30 and hence to a calculator 21. The length to be cut is pre-set on a device 34. As the strip passes through the shear, the device 5 measures its temperature and transmits the information to the calculator 21 which allows for expansion corresponding to the desired cutting length. The calculator 21 then stops the drive to the carriage 17 and the motors 13 are either stopped simultaneously or after a slight delay. The clamp 17 holds the strip during the cutting operation, and the cycle of operations is repeated until the leading end of the last length to be cut has passed through the shear. At this point the carriage 17 and table 12 are stopped, the clamp 7 grips the strip and the drive means 18a starts, and at the same time the clamp 20 is opened and the carriage 17 returns along the table 12 towards the next new length of strip. The impulse generator 28a now feeds impulses to the counter 30 and calculator 21 which stops the last sheet for the waste end to be cropped. In a modification, the carriage 8a is moved a predetermined distance by a fluidoperated cylinder 10a, after the clamp 7 has closed.
