Abstract

870,571. Shearing. WEAN ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Feb. 20, 1959 [Sept. 22, 1958], No. 5880/59. Class 83 (4). In a " flying " cutting, pressing &c. machine 3 for performing operations in cycles on moving strip material 2, a feed-stop 6 stops movement of the strip, which is again fed to a selected point in the cycle of the machine so that the first operation performed on the strip occurs at a controlled distance from its leading end. As applied to cutting the strip into lengths in a flying shear which need not cut at every cycle, waste is reduced by making the first cut close to the leading end of the strip. The strip is uncoiled by a variable-speed electric motor (not shown) and fed over a table 1. As it approaches the stop 6, which is operated by a pneumatic cylinder 8, it passes between a lamp 11 and a photo-electric cell 10 which stops the feed-motor, the strip moving on to stop 6 under its own inertia and tripping a flag-switch 9 which withdraws stop 6 and starts a variablespeed electric motor (not shown) for operating the shear 3. A flag-switch 12 operated by the shear-blades 13 as they close, energizes a relay which engages a clutch 16a, 17a between a gear-box 15, coupled with the drive for the rolls 5 of a feeding-and-straightening device 4 which is driven synchronously with shear 3, and a signal generator 18. Pulses from a cam-operated switch in generator 18 register further movement of the shear and are fed to a counter 20 which at a pre-set count re-starts the feed-motor and when the rolls 5 engage the strip, energizes a timer. This switches the feed and shear motors to a faster speed and disengages the clutch 16a, 17a, the timer being set to return the apparatus to the condition for receiving another strip when the preceding strip has been used up. The counter may be calibrated in sheet lengths and set manually or by remote control. Switches may be operated manually to stop the feed and move stop 6 during setting-up. The voltage on the motors may be, regulated by a Ward Leonard control system. An electric control system is described. Specification 857,861 is referred to.
