Abstract
In a method of sintering a refractory powder the sintering is effected in the presence of a vaporized metal atmosphere the metal vapour being selected from a metal whose oxide has a higher negative free energy of formation than the oxide of the metal being sintered and having a vapour pressure of at least 10-5 mms. at the sintering temperature. The refractory powder includes the metals of Groups 111a, to V111a of the Periodic Table, the rare earths with atomic numbers 57-51, Uranium and plutonium, the carbides, borides, nitrides, sulphides, silicides and phosphides of U, Pu, V, W, Mo, Ta, Nb, Zr and Cr and mixtures of these. The process is examplified in the vacuum sintering of uranium nitride and uranium carbide at 1550 DEG C. and 1600 DEG C. respectively in the presence of vapours of Al or Be formed by the decomposition of uranium aluminide and uranium beryllide. Sintering in an inert atmosphere may also be carried out. The source of the metal vapour may be the metal per se, a decomposable salt or an aluminide of zirconium or iron. The uranium nitride powder has a grain size of 3.8 micron and 0. 3 micron the uranium carbide a grain size of 0. 6 micron.
