A spinneret plate for spinning filaments having a multi-lobal cross-section comprises a solid plate having at least one patterned orifice therethrough, having at least two straight arms extending outwardly and in an angular direction from a central portion, with the smallest angle between adjacent arms being less than 180 degrees, each arm intersecting the central. portion thereby providing communication from arm to arm, at least two of the arms being traversed by slots which intersect the arms at a position remote from the central portion and spaced from the extremities of the arms, each of the slot-traversed arms having a perimeterto-area ratio P/Q of at least 0À5. Where the units of measurement are thousandth of an inch the slots may intersect the arms (length L 0 ) at a distance D between 0À2 L 0 and 0À8 L 0 from the intersection of the arms and the central portion. The slots may be comprised of two fins of length L F which is at least 1À5 W 0 (width of arms). The orifice may have four arms equispaced about a central point, two of the arms opposite each other being traversed by slots. The cross-section of filaments melt-spun through the orifices may be controlled by controlling the quenching conditions. Also the crosssection may be controlled by spinning through an adjustable orifice having movable slots. Since the material flowing through the orifices of the invention is forced to take a configuration having a high surface area/volume ratio, solidification of the material passing through the arms of the orifice is rapid, and the multilobal form of the filaments is achieved without use of extreme quench conditions.
