Abstract

1,271,435. Melt-spun filaments. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 8 Aug., 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 39745/69. Heading B5B. Synthetic organic thermoplastic materials are melt-spun by extruding the molten material downwardly through a spinneret whose outlet face is substantially horizontal and has at least 25 openings per square inch of effective spinning area into a bath of a quench liquid, the spinneret face being spaced from the surface of the quench liquid a distance of less than one inch. The spinneret may have from 35 to 100 openings per square inch of effective spinning area and may have a total of at least 500 openings. The quenched filaments may have a denier in the range 4-600. The quench liquid may have a surface tension below 65 dynes per cm., preferably below 40 dynes per cm. It may be water containing a surfactant. After quenching the filaments may be drawn to from 2 to 8 times their initial length. They may be drawn to a denier in the range 1-300. After drawing they may be mechanically crimped. The polymer used in the examples is polypropylene. The distance between the spinneret face and the surface of .the quench liquid may be controlled by means of an adjustable weir or its equivalent. The surface tension of the quench liquid may be maintained below a desired value by continuously feeding a metered proportion of the surfactant to the quench liquid and allowing the latter to flow over an adjustable weir.
