Abstract
1,037,403. Road traffic signals on vehicles. W. H. PLANT. Feb. 26, 1963 [Nov. 16, 1962], No. 4519/66. Divided out of 1,037,402. Heading G4Q. A vehicle with an earthing device 40 controlled by the vacuum in the engine induction manifold is provided with a warning light controlled by an electric switch responsive to the position of the earthing device to show when the accelerator is released. In Fig. 3 the device 40 is actuated by piston 53 in vacuum cylinder 41 connected by pipe 42 to the induction manifold adjacent the edge of throttle butterfly valve 44 so that when the engine is running normally the manifold vacuum holds the piston 53 against end wall 60 and the device raised and the switch open. When the accelerator is released the pressure rises above valve 44 permitting the device 40 to fall thereby closing the switch to illuminate the light, which is preferably at the top or bottom of the vehicle's rear window and in circuit with the ignition switch. In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) the piston may be spring loaded and the cylinder connected to the manifold below the butterfly valve.
