A profile milling cutter or hob comprises peripherally-relieved teeth and gashes which, at approximately the innermost point of the cutting-edge, essentially extend over the full width of the cutter, wherein the teeth, measured in a peripheral direction at the innermost point of the cutting-edge, have an arc length of not more than #0À50y<SP>2</SP>+12À25 mms. and the gashes have an arc length of not more than 0À5+ #0À3y<SP>2À1</SP>+12À25 mms., where y is the radial difference between the innermost point of the cutting edge and the outside diameter of the cutter, i.e. the height of the face edge. In conventional cutters, the gashes are initially too small to allow correct chip flow, whereas after successively grinding the tooth faces to their usable limits, the gashes are too large. The relieved surface of a tooth to the left of a line 16-16 is convex and is concave to the right. The relief angle 15 may be over 8 degrees.
