802,260. Gear - finishing. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Jan. 23, 1957 [Feb. 20, 1956], No. 2416/57. Class 83 (3). A gear-shaving-cutter comprises teeth having the cutting-edges formed on lands which increase in width towards the centre of each tooth. In shaving a helical-gear with a standard cutter using diagonal traverse, the acute corners of the teeth are not properly machined. This fault is eliminated with the present cutter. The grooves 12 in the teeth are of approximately equal width and have inclined sides so that the edges 20 have an obtuse cutting-angle and the edges 18 a cutting- angle of 90 degrees. The lands vary in width from 0.015 to 0.020 inches at the ends of the teeth to 0.025 to 0.035 inches at the centres, with a groove-width of 0.040 to 0.045 inches. The outside land is not of increased width, as is conventional.
