Abstract

1,036,975. Feeding shaft furnaces. BLACKSTONE CORPORATION. April 29, 1965, No. 18183/65. Heading F4B. Additive material is fed below the surface of molten metal in a cupola hearth from a bunker 20 via a vibratory shoot 21, and a hopper 22 discharging by a door 24 operated by air cylinder 25 into a delivery passage 23 and a feed conduit 26, final discharge into the cupola being by a ram 29 operated by air cylinder 30 or opening a gate 27 operated by air cylinder 28. The charging operation is carried out when blast air supplied to the tuyeres 16 is cut off by valve 18 in pipe 17 operated by air cylinder 19, whereupon level of liquid metal in the hearth rises from B to A. Sequential operation of cylinders 19, 25, 28 and 30 and operation of vibratory shoot 21 are controlled by conventional electric timers and circuitry, Fig. 4 (not shown). Restarting of the blast lowers the liquid metal level again, this movement assisting solution of the additive.
