Abstract
761,306. Charging shaft furnaces. REX. ROTH, A. Sept. 8, 1954 [Sept. 17, 1953], No. 26998/54. Class 51 (2). Apparatus for charging a slug of compressed shavings, finishing materials, &c. into the melting zone of a cupola, comprises a hopper A feeding charge material into a chamber B under control of a slotted sleeve D having a handle F, a check valve C held closed by compressed air from a pipe G against the outlet end of the chamber B, and a further compressed air pipe J supplying the chamber B under control of a valve K. Charge material is allowed to fill the chamber B, the sleeve D is closed and the valve K opened, initially compressing the charge into a slug against the check-valve C, and finally overcoming the resistance of the latter to blow the slug of compressed material into the cupola. Several of the charging devices may be disposed around the cupola shaft. The compressed air supply J may be replaced as propellant by an explosive charge.
