Abstract

1415345 Spray producers H B ZACHRY CO 14 Nov 1972 [15 Nov 1971 52526/72 Heading B2F [Also in Divisions C7 and F1] Apparatus for applying particulate coating material e.g. tungsten carbide, to a workpiece in a series of pulses, comprises a combustion chamber 2 having a constricting outlet nozzle 4, means 8 for feeding a charge of combustible gaseous mixture e.g. propane, into the combustion chamber, means 10 for igniting the mixture in the chamber, and means 12 for injecting a charge of particulate material into the combustion chamber, the ignition of the combustible mixture causing combustion by deflagration, as opposed to detonation, whereby a flame front extends through the mixture at sobsonic velocity. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the chamber 2 is so dimensioned that the pressure rise during deflagration is so rapid that the last part of combustion is by auto-ignition. The injection of a charge of combustible gaseous mixture into the chamber during each cycle is controlled by a solenoidoperated valve (40), Figure 6 (not shown) and energisation of a spark plug 10 is in dependence on the movement of the valve (40). The period and initiation of the injection of particulate material into the chamber is controlled by an electrical circuit (not shown) having a switch operated by movement of said valve (40), and a solenoid-operated valve (128), Figure 8 (not shown). The particulate material is fed under pressure into the chamber 2 from a hopper (142), Figure 8 (not shown). Instead of separate injection of the particulate material it may be mixed with the combustible gaseous mixture prior to injection into the chamber.
