Abstract

1,255,014. Charging metal melting furnaces. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd., and J. HILLESS. 19 Sept., 1969 [20 Sept., 1968], No. 44951/68. Heading F4B. A charging device for feeding swarf from a hopper 27 to a melting furnace crucible 22 comprises a screw 14 driven by an air motor 20 and pushing swarf into a feed tube 11, and a reciprocating ram 26 driven by an air motor 17 forcing the swarf below a layer of slag 23 on molten metal in the crucible. Tube 11 may be made of heat resistant glass or ceramic and the device may be lifted bodily out of the crucible and transferred to another. In a modification (Fig. 1) a feed screw rotates continuously in the feed tube which points downwardly into the crucible, the feed screw being slowly withdrawn by a pneumatic motor. A mass of swarf accumulating at the end of the feed tube is discharged by a rapid return movement given to the screw by the motor.
