Abstract

103,663. Good, J. Jan. 27, 1916, [Convention date]. Valves; valve-gear. -To obviate wear in the region of the ports, a rotary valve has a ported cylindrical portion 9 which is separated from metallic contact with the casing by about 0.002 inch, and a tapered or curved bearing-surface 8 designed to wear evenly throughout its length. The curve shown in Fig. 1 is a tractrix. To prevent leakage at the face of the portion 9 it is roughened or knurled, or a fine screw-thread may be cut upon it. The valve is held to its bearing by a spring 20 forming part of a loose driving-connexion 14, 16. Between the valve and the casing is a thin film of lubricating-oil, through which heat from the valve is conducted to the water jacket 6. Modifications are described in which a single valve controls both inlet and exhaust passages. The valves are so constructed that any unbalanced pressure acts in the direction of the axes of rotation and assists in holding the valves to their bearings.
