[Also in Division B8] An apparatus for the tying of coils of wire has means to pass a length of wire through the coil and gripper arms mounted on a reciprocable carriage and with grippers at their extremities which clamp the ends of the length and move, first to wrap and tension it round the coil section and then to twist the wire ends together. The wire length may be fed by the arms themselves. In one embodiment in which two ties are made simultaneously by identical mechanisms on opposite sides of a coil 35, arms 31, 32 carry gripper jaws 5a, 5b which before operation are positioned approximately above and below the centre of the coil. The tying wire for each mechanism is drawn from a coil and fed through a hollow needle which carries it through the upper open jaws 5a to the lower jaws 5b. These grip the wire and the needle withdraws with the wire sliding through it until the jaws 5a close to grip and sever the wire length. The arms 31, 32 are pivoted in a housing integral with a hollow shaft 33 mounted on a carriage 34, 34a and are moved relative to each other by the power unit 40 connected through a control rod 42 to the ends of the gripper arms. The axes 45 of the arms are inclined to each other to allow their ends to cross and assume a twisting position. The shaft 33 is rotatable in the carriage. The two carriages are moved radially outwards until each wire reaches the inner surface of the coil when the arms swing towards each other and cross over to wrap the wire about the coil. Each shaft 33 is then rotated to effect twisting . The carriages 34, 34a are both driven by a power unit 49 which moves the former directly and the latter through rack and pinion means 53-55, to ensure synchronous operation.
