Abstract

1443801 Winding transfer tails PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 12 Oct 1973 [16 Oct 1972] 47759/73 Heading D1J The invention relates to the winding of dual packages and the provision of a transfer tail on each package. The tubes 12, 13 to be wound with strands 19, 20 are mounted on a common spindle 11. The two strands 19, 20 are initially laid in a guide eye 23 and extended onwards into the gap between the tubes 12, 13 whereupon the tubes 12, 13 are moved against each other to nip the strands 19, 20 therebetween. The drive means for the spindle member 11 is then actuated and the spindle 11 is brought up to speed, waste strand being wound up in a slot 18 between the tubes 12, 13. When the spindle 11 has reached full speed a shaft 25, on which inclined arms 24 and a finger 24a are mounted, is rotated to swing the arms 24 and finger 24a forwardly towards the viewer and then downwardly. This lifts the strands 19, 20 out of the guide eye 23 and causes the strands to move apart by sliding down the inclined arms 24; the strands 19, 20 being then quickly picked up by the strand traversing members 14, 15. In the short period of time that the strands 19, 20 move from between the tubes 12, 13 to the strand traversing members 14, 15 the transfer tails are wound. To ensure that the transfer tails are wound only after maximum speed have been attained, there may be an electro-magnet 28 that holds the arms 24 and finger 24a against the eye 23 until such time as spindle 11 reaches full speed. Thereafter the electro-magnet 28 is automatically de-energized. The shaft 25 may be operated manually by a handle 26.
