Abstract

[Also in Division B8] A machine for binding bundles of rods &c., with wire or the like includes a support D across which the wire is fed, the bundle being placed on the support and wire, and the wire leading end being passed round the bundle by an arm 20 pivoted at 19, jaws 12 clamping the wire after severing or notching and rotating to twist the ends together. The jaws are pivoted on a shaft 7 rotatable by a pulley 11 but fixed axially and having slideable along it and rotatable with it a member 6, 6<SP>1</SP>. The wire is fed through the bore of the shaft 7 by driven-rollers, passing through straightening rolls en route (Fig. 1, not shown). A non-rotatable sleeve 4 slideable in a support 3 by rack and pinion means C, B, C<SP>1</SP>, advances the member 6, 6<SP>1</SP> towards the bundle when a ring 13 engages the jaws to clamp them on the wire. The ring also contacts a lever 14 causing a cutting or notching blade 16 mounted on the shaft 7 to slide transverse to its axis to operate on the wire. If the wire is notched, it breaks during twisting. The operation of the machine may be initiated by the bundle contacting switch means on the support.
