Abstract
1323293 Stripping cables PLESSEY CO Ltd 30 Nov 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 62826/69 Heading H2C A length of cable insulation is removed by severing the insulation by blades circumferentially at two spaced points and also lengthwise, blade deflecting means being provided to facilitate removal of the insulation. In the embodiment shown, two identical heads 10 are moved together about wire 24. Each has blades, e.g. 12, 13 for the left hand head, with circumferential cutting edges 17 and a blade, e.g. 11 with a longitudinal edge 18. After the heads close on the wire a member 21 is moved upwardly by actuating rod 23. The member 21 has inclined ends which act through balls 22 to flex the blades 12, 13 outwardly to separate the outer parts of insulation from the intermediate part. The member 21 then pushes blade 11 upwardly to split the intermediate part which is meanwhile gripped by pressure pads (25), (26), (Fig. 3b not shown), above and below. After retraction of the heads the insulation fragments are removed (e.g. by compressed air). In another embodiment, Figs. 6-9, not shown, the blades 11, 11<SP>1</SP> are replaced by bars which press the intermediate portion of insulation to distort it so that it can be severed by a vertically acting blade. The severed portion is then removed by feeding the wire forward in a curved path.
