Abstract

1300934 Removing polymeric material from wires BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDERS CABLES Ltd 5 Oct 1970 [4 July 1969] 33813/69 Heading C7E [Also in Division H2] A method of stripping polymeric material from a wire or cable comprises cooling the material to a temperature at which it is brittle and then applying forces to fracture and remove it from the wire or cable. A wire 1 is drawn by a capstan 4 from a reel 2 and passes through an elongate trough 3 full of liquid nitrogen, and then through a stripping head 6 and finally through a brush 7 which removes any loose fragments of insulation from the wire and collects them by suitably positioned suction nozzles 8. The stripping head 6 may be in the form of three or five guides arranged to flex the wire, or alternatively may be in the form of two rollers between which the wire passes and is crushed. For longitudinal splitting of the insulation three sharp-edged splitting rolls may be arranged around the wire so that they partly penetrate the insulation. Ultrasonic vibrations may be employed to remove or assist in removing the embrittled material. This method may be used for stripping ends of wires, for reprocessing of wire, or for scrap recovery.
