Abstract
103,631. Godfrey, R. B. Nov. 29, 1916. Valves.-A water-cooled internal-combustion engine has a rotary sleeve valve 10, Fig. 1, extending around and below each cylinder jacket 8 and provided at its lower end with a driving worm or toothed wheel 14. An outer jacketed casing 3 surrounds the sleeve 10 and is fixed to the crank case. The worm-wheel 14 somewhat overlies the worm 15 in order to keep the sleeve 10 pressed against a siioulder 16 at its upper end. The sleeve 10 may be made in three parts, as shown in Fig. 7, connected loosely together by keys 24, 25; this arrangement prevents side thrust from the worm from being imparted to the part 10b which contains the valve ports. The keys 24, 25 are of soft metal and will shear if the upper part of the sleeve seizes. In a modification, the engine has three cylinders each provided with four pairs of openings communicating with common inlet and common exhaust pipes, and each sleeve valve 10 has four corresponding ports. Fig. 8 shows an arrangement of packing-rings surrounding the cylinder jacket 8, comprising two compression rings. 36, 39 and an expanding split ring 37 held against rotation and formed with ports registering with the valve ports and the openings in the cylinder. The ring 37 presses outwards against the sleeve 10.
