The planetary ball friction gear of the parent Specification is modified to permit locking of the gear for direct drive by forming axial slots 21 in the cage 5 for the balls, the ends of the intervening fingers 22 being engageable with dog-clutch projections 4 on the inner sleeve 3. A spring-loaded pin 18 is engageable with spaced recesses 19, 20 in a sleeve 14 to lock the cage 5 in its axially adjusted positions.
