Abstract

1281519 Ratchet clutches FLUIDRIVE ENG CO Ltd 18 July 1969 [2 Aug 1968 13 Aug 1968] 37121/68 and 38737/68 Heading F2C A synchronous self-shifting clutch which selectively operates for either direction of rotation comprises an intermediate member 5 carrying oppositely directed pawls 10, 11 which initiate movement of the intermediate member 5 along helical splines 4 on one clutch element 2 to engage teeth 8 or 9 on the intermediate member synchronously with teeth 3 on the clutch member 1. As shown the clutch is in a neutral position in which both sets of pawls 10, 11 are disengaged from the clutch teeth 3 to prevent drive in either direction. The intermediate member 5 is moved axially by a control sleeve 15 to engage the pawls 10 or 11 with the teeth 3 and thereafter the pawls 10 or 11 initiate helical movement of the intermediate member 5 to engage teeth 8 or 9 synchronously with the teeth 3. Sufficient lost motion is provided between the control sleeve 15 and extension 12 of the intermediate member 5 to permit the clutch engaging helical movement of the latter. The control sleeve 15 may additionally carry teeth 23 engageable with teeth 21 or 22 on the clutch element 2 to lock the clutch engaged. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the pawls (101, 11<SP>1</SP>) are engageable with a separate ratchet ring (25) axially slidable by a control sleeve (26) to select drive in one direction or the other.
