Abstract

1,208,695. Change-speed gear. ROOTES MOTORS Ltd. 23 May, 1969 [18 March, 1968], No. 12943/68. Heading F2D. In a motor-vehicle constant-mesh doublelayshaft type C.S.G., first and second ratio gears 23, 24 freely mounted on an input shaft 15 are selectively synchronously coupled by the usual slidable splined synchronizer sleeve 31 and baulk rings 30 to the input shaft 15 and respectively mesh layshaft gears 36, 32, the latter gear 32 of which additionally meshes a gear 38 fast on an output shaft 39, the layshaft 1st gear 36 being mounted via a one-way clutch 37 on the layshaft 33 whereby gear changes from 2nd to 1st may be readily effected by the synchronizing sleeve and baulk ring 31, 30 without the necessity of speeding up the input shaft 15 and relevant parts via the synchronizer cones &c. thereby relieving the synchronizer of considerable load and wear during 2nd-1st downshifts. A further gear 53, fast on the input shaft 15, directly drives a second layshaft 48, the integral gears 46, 47 of which respectively mesh top and third ratio gears 43, 44 freely mounted on the output shaft 39 and similarly selectively synchronously coupled thereto by a further slidable baulk rings and sleeve, which sleeve may be additionally formed externally with teeth 55 selectively engaged by a slidable gear (not shown), on a further layshaft (not shown), driven from a gear 54 on the second layshaft for reverse drive to the output shaft 39. The top gear 43 may be mounted on the output shaft 39 via a one-way clutch 45 which serves as a stationary hill-hold, i.e. locks the gear-box on reverse overrun bias when the vehicle is parked facing uphill and first or second gear is engaged with the input shaft.
