Abstract

1469409 Ratchet clutches SSS PATENTS Ltd 18 Nov 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 53351/73 Heading F2C In a synchro self-shifting clutch wherein clutch engaging movement of an intermediate member 31 along helical splines 29 on one clutch member 28 to bring straight teeth 33 on the intermediate member 31 into precise interengagement with straight teeth 26 on another clutch member 25 is initiated by a pawl and ratchet mechanism 36, 46 between the clutch member 25 and either the intermediate member or an auxiliary member 42 helically splined to the intermediate member 31, one element, e.g. the ratchet wheel 36 of the pawl and ratchet mechanism is carried by a sleeve 34 helically splined to the clutch member 25 and prevented from moving axially relative to the intermediate member by a flange 48 fast with the intermediate member engaging a groove 47 in the sleeve 34. The pitches of the helical spline are such that during final clutch engagement the intermediate member 31 rotates relative to the sleeve 34 to relieve the pawls of load. On synchronism the pawl and ratchet mechanism 36, 46 rotates the auxiliary member 42 relative to the intermediate member 31 whereupon the auxiliary member 42 moves helically along the intermediate member to bring clutch teeth 35-45 on the sleeve 34 and auxiliary member 42 into engagement. Thereafter the intermediate member 31 rotates relative to the clutch member 28 and thus moves helically therealong to bring the clutch teeth 26, 33 into precise interengagement. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the auxiliary member 42 is omitted and the pawls are carried by the intermediate member.
