Abstract
1,035,482. Drawing. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. May 3, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962], No. 4260/62. Heading B3P. In a tube drawing machine comprising a swift, a die and a drawing block, the swift is movable relative to the drawing die in a direction parallel to the axis of the die, from a loading position in which a vertical plane normal to the axis of the die and passing through the axis of rotation of a coiled workpiece on the swift is spaced from the die in a direction away from the drawing block, to a position in which said vertical plane passes through the die. The swift comprises a frame 4, carrying rods 5 which support the workpiece 6, Fig. 1 (not shown), and has rollers 7, 8 enabling the frame to move freely along guide rails 9, which are themselves mounted on a carriage 11 which is slidable along a base 12. The draw die 2 is also mounted on the carriage which is reciprocated by a fluid cylinder 13. Operation.-The frame 4 is moved to a position in which the axis of the coil will be in the plane " L " and the coil placed on the rods 5 with the straight end portion resulting from the previous draw in line with the die. The frame is then moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the work passes through the die 2 to enable the end to be gripped by a pulling-in dog mounted on the drawing block 3. As drawing proceeds the carriage 11 is moved along the base to lay the drawn product helically on the drawing block. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the swift 20 comprises an annular well 21 mounted on a trolley 22, with the axis of the well vertical. The tubing to be drawn passes through an opening 33 in the sidewall and bottom of the well, through a die 31 and on to the drawing block 32. The well 21 is movable between the drawing position shown in Fig. 4 and the dotted line position indicated at 28. Movement is effected by a fluid operated cylinder 25 and the assembly of the swift and the supporting frame 26 moves downwardly to lay the tubing helically on the surface of the drawing block 32.
