A reel, for either reeling wire, running in vertically from above, to between two concentric rows of bars, or for reeling strip running horizontally and tangentially on to a single row of bars, has the bars of the rotatable winding basket arranged on a plate connected to the reel shaft. This plate is divided into an inner disc carrying the inner row of bars and an outer ring carrying the outer row, with the disc and ring axially adjustable so that either the inner row or both rows can be in the winding position. In Fig. 1 the ring 9 is supported in a tube 10 suspended from a winding table 5 and having vertical guiding ledges 11. The ring can be coupled to the disc 8 by pins 14 which move in slots in the disc 8 and move in and out of engagement with the ring by a mechanism comprising pins 17 moving in slots 15 (Fig. 2, not shown) in a control disc 16 fixed to a shaft 18 which can be rotated by a bush 20 when the disc is in its lowered position. The disc, with or without the ring, is raised into the winding position by the reel shaft 2, with the bars passing through bores in the plate 5. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the ring is raised and lowered by a separate pulley arrangement 42, 43, with the guide tube 35 suspended from the disc 33, while the ring can be coupled in the raised position to the disc by pins 44, each of which, through crank levers 46 and rods 47, is connected to rollers 52, a fork 51 and to a pneumatic motor 53. Shaft 31 raises the winding table to remove the finished bundle of wire or strip from the bars.
